Stress. It’s a word we throw around daily. Work is stressful. Life is stressful. This situation is stressful. But have you ever stopped to think about where stress actually comes from?
Here’s the truth: Stress isn’t something that just “happens” to us—it’s something we create.
Stress isn’t built into situations. Two people can experience the same event—one remains calm, the other feels overwhelmed. Why?
Because stress is a response to how we think about a situation, not the situation itself. It’s the result of:
🧠 The thoughts we attach to what’s happening
💭 The level of control we believe we have
When we feel powerless or out of control, stress levels rise. But when we shift our perspective, stress can shrink.
Not all stress feels the same.
Real-Time Stress – This is stress in the moment. A deadline is looming, your child is having a meltdown, or your car breaks down on the way to work. The brain perceives a challenge and reacts.
Anticipatory Stress – This is stress about something that hasn’t even happened yet. It’s the “What if?” spiral. What if I mess up? What if I can’t handle it? What if something goes wrong? Your mind creates a stressful future that may never even exist.
The common thread? Both types of stress come from thoughts we create.
Occasional stress is normal. But when stress becomes a daily companion, it affects everything:
❌ Physically: Headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, weakened immune system
❌ Emotionally: Anxiety, irritability, low mood, lack of motivation
❌ Behaviourally: Poor sleep, avoidance, unhealthy coping mechanisms
Left unchecked, chronic stress keeps the nervous system in overdrive. But you can take back control.
Since stress starts in the mind, that’s where we need to start making changes.
1️⃣Challenge Unhelpful Thoughts
Not every thought deserves your attention. When stress creeps in, ask:
🔍 Is this thought 100% true?
🔍 Would I say this to a friend?
🔍 What’s a more helpful way to think about this?
Thoughts shape feelings. If you change the thought, you change the stress response.
2. Build Your Self-Esteem
The stronger your sense of self, the less overwhelming life feels. Confidence gives you a solid foundation to handle challenges. Try this:
✅ Keep promises to yourself—small, achievable goals build trust in yourself
✅ Focus on what you can control
✅ Remind yourself of past wins—proof you can handle more than you think
3️⃣ Push Your Comfort Zone (One Baby Step at a Time)
Avoidance fuels stress. The more we shrink away, the bigger stress feels. The antidote? Take action—small, manageable steps.
✔️ If public speaking stresses you out, start by speaking up in a small meeting.
✔️ If social situations feel overwhelming, begin with short, low-pressure interactions.
Each time you face discomfort, you teach your brain: This isn’t as dangerous as I thought.
Stress isn’t something we have to accept. It’s something we can change. By shifting your thoughts, building confidence, and taking small, brave steps, you can create a life where stress doesn’t control you.
You are stronger than stress. You always have been. 💛
